The 16th annual Black Swamp Arts Festival, slated for Sept. 5-7, will feature a variety of visual artists from across the country, local and national musical acts, and a large, interactive youth art area, all free of charge in downtown Bowling Green. The festival opens at 4 p.m. Sept. 5 with live music on the main stage. Visual art areas are open Saturday and Sunday. Festival guests will be entertained with live music throughout the weekend until the festival wraps up at 5 p.m. Sunday. A variety of talents are expected for 2008 with the ringing theme of horns -- from the Czech Republic's Plastic People of the Universe to the Saturday headliner, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, a vibrant New Orleans brass band, whose most recent album, "What's Going On?" plays tribute to Marvin Gaye and the devestation left behind by Hurricane Katrina. The festival will also feature the legendary Grahm Parker on Saturday's line-up. Big sounds from Shemekia Copeland and Tanglefoot are also slated for the weekend. Five entertainment venues include the main stage, electronica stage, peanut butter and rock (teen stage), youth art and unplugged sets at the Huntington Bank courtyard. The full performance schedule can be found at www.blackswamparts.org. As music rings through the downtown on Saturday and Sunday, patrons can enjoy two fine art and fine craft shows featuring artists from across the nation as well as local artists from the Wood County community. The juried art show features more than 100 artists in 16 varied mediums ranging from watercolors to photography to glass. Along with past festival winners and familiar favorites, many new artists will display their artwork. Also, more than 40 local artists will display in the Wood County Invitational Art Show. Several other visual art venues are available including a display of Bowling Green State University students artwork. Art fairs are open Saturday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. The theme of horns will be visible in the youth art area, where children can express their artistic creativity by making a variety of kid-friendly art projects. Musical and theatrical performances geared toward children are featured on the youth arts stage, open Saturday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, 12-5 p.m. Festival hours are 4 p.m.-12 a.m. Sept. 5; 10 a.m.-12 a.m. Sept. 6; and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 7.
