Sports Briefs: Reineke pitches for Portland

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Ayersville graduate Chad Reineke took the mound for the first time since being traded from the Houston Astros' organization to the San Diego Padres' organization on Saturday night against the Nashville Sounds.

Reineke, who threw 98 pitches, received a no-decision in his first start as a Portland Beaver (Padres' Triple-A affiliate) after tossing six innings. He allowed two solo home runs and struck out a handful of hitters.

The Beavers lost to the Sounds, 6-2.

* Golf

Tinora season to start: The Tinora High School golf season will begin on Monday, Aug. 4 at 2 p.m. at St. Mike's Golf Course. Physicals are required for anyone participating. For more information contact coach Fred Moore at 419-782-0504.

Paulding practice: The first day of golf practice for Paulding High School will be held Monday, Aug. 4. Contact Don Gorrell at 419-399-7699 if you are interested in playing this season.

Defiance girls: Any girl interested in playing high school golf at Defiance should contact coach Martha Mallott at 419-576-7597.

All girls will need a physical prior to Monday, Aug. 4 in order to start practice that day.

* Football

DJHS 7th grade: The first practice for Defiance Junior High School seventh grade football will be held on Thursday, Aug. 11 beginning at 10 a.m. with a helmet fitting at the Defiance Junior High School. Practice will then run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day.

A parent's meeting will be held on Monday, Aug. 11 at 5:30 p.m. at the junior high field. Athletes are reminded that they must have a physical before practicing. For more information contact Rich Peters at 419-782-0050.

DJHS 8th grade: The first practice for Defiance Junior High School eighth grade football will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 5 from 4-5:30 p.m. at the Defiance Junior High School with a parent's meeting to follow that day at 5:30 p.m. Athletes are reminded that they must have a physical before practicing. For more information contact Rich Peters at 419-782-0050.

Rough day for Krauss: Former Patrick Henry standout Marc Krauss went 0-for-4 in the Under Armour-Cape Cod League All-Star game on Saturday evening at Veteran's Field in Chatham, Mass.

Krauss, who started in left field for the West All-Stars, also drew a walk and scored a run in the West's 8-6 setback to the East All-Stars.

Krauss is hitting at a .389 clip this summer to rank second in the wooden bat league for the Bourne Braves. He also ranks second with 28 RBI. Bourne returns to action tonight against Chatham after Sunday's game with Hyaannis was rained out.

DJHS volleyball: Tryouts for Defiance Junior High School seventh and eighth grade volleyball will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 6 from 9-11 a.m. at the Defiance Junior High School. Athletes are reminded that they must have a physical before practicing. For more information contact Rich Peters at 419-782-0050.

DJHS cross country: The first practice for Defiance Junior High School seventh and eighth grade boys and girls cross country will be held on Monday, Aug. 11 from 9-11:30 a.m. at the Defiance High School. Reverse raffle: The Defiance High School Athletic Boosters will be holding a reverse raffle on Saturday, Aug. 23. The event will be held at the Eagles Hall, 711 in Defiance.

Tickets are $100 per ticket (per couple), and only 200 tickets will be sold.

The event will include an open bar starting at 6 p.m. and dinner starting at 7:15 p.m. The raffle will start at 8 p.m. and features a $3,000 grand prize as well as $2,000 in additional prizes.
