The Defiance High School girls finished first for the third consecutive year at the Palmer Relays while the boys placed second on Thursday at DHS.

The Lady Bulldogs captured seven events in totaling 118 points, 30 more than runner-up Toledo Whitmer. Napoleon was third in the field of eight teams with 77 points.

The Whitmer boys were first with 96 points, edging Defiance by eight points. Napoleon finished third with 72 points.

"The girls really competed well tonight," said DHS coach Steve Wahl. "The conditions weren't great, but we had some good performances all across the board. Their hard work in continuing to pay off and, hopefully, we can keep it rolling."

DHS won five running events, the 800, 1600, 3200, 6400 and distance medley relays and also won two field event relays, the high jump and long jump.

The Defiance boys took top honors in four events, the 1600, 3200, 6400 and 400 shuttle hurdle relays.

"I was very pleased with tonight's effort," said Defiance coach Steve Rittenour. "I thought that our athletes went out and competed against some good track teams. We ran some of the best times of the year in some of our spring relays and I was very pleased with the effort from our distance guys.

"Overall, I think tonight's effort is a very good step to take as we get ready for the league meet next week."

Also from the area, the Napoleon girls won the 400 shuttle hurdle and discus throw relays and the Archbold girls were first in the 400 relay. For the boys, Napoleon was a winner in the high jump relay.
