Mike Boff of the Defiance Soil and Water District will speak to Northwest Ohio Rivers Council on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Community Room of the Northtowne Mall, Defiance. The public is invited.

Boff will discuss the role of ditches and their maintenance.

"Water is a universal concern," said NWORC president Michael Fronk. "Ditches lead to creeks, and creeks to rivers, they're all connected to make the Black Swamp valuable farm land and a prime place to live."

NWORC is one of the organizations started before the turn of the century, when channelization, the clear-cutting and rip-rapping of rivers was proposed. Today's maintenance recognizes value of natural vegetation and enhanced scenic views for boaters as well as people using country roads.

Water for drinking is affected by runoff from farm fields, parking lots, and herbicide-treated lawns. Manmade filters don't cleanse water, but tree-lined banks and wetlands do. The first aim of NWORC is to help residents understand what's at stake. Newsletter and meetings are informative. For more about the Rivers Council and its memorial trail call, 419-782-8551.
