Kameron Mooney was an active, healthy 3-year-old boy for most of his young life.

That all changed on Jan. 22, when he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

The disease causes damage and death from cancerous white blood cells that overproduce and crowd out normal cells in the bone marrow, often spreading to other organs.

"Kam is currently undergoing chemo and many other treatments at St. Jude Children's Hospital (in Memphis, Tenn.)," said Defiance resident Jackie Killion, the boy's aunt. "Due to the chemotherapy, his immune system is very weak."

Within the last week, young Mooney has developed pancreatitis and pneumonia. He is the son of Lima residents Mike and Tonya Mooney, who have numerous family members in the Defiance and Ottawa areas.

"Kam will be in St. Jude's for a couple more weeks until this is all cleared out and then hopefully he'll be able to stay at the Ronald McDonald House with his parents," reported Killion.

The family is struggling financially due to a leave of absence both parents have taken from their employers in order to be with their son during his hospital stay.

A "Help Kameron Mooney Battle Leukemia Benefit" will be held Saturday from 5-11 p.m. at VFW Post 1275, 124 E. Elm St., Lima. The event includes live bands, food, 50/50 raffle and auction.

"Kam and his parents have many family and friends in and around Defiance, and we have received wonderful support for the benefit from local merchants like Ponderosa and Gustwiller Electric," said Killion. "All labor and expenses of the benefit are being donated so that 100 percent of the proceeds can be given to his parents."

For area residents unable to attend the benefit, monetary donations may be sent to: Kameron Mooney Benefit Fund, c/o Citizens National Bank, 102 S. Main St., Bluffton 45817.

For more information about the benefit or to donate an auction item, contact Killion at 419-439-2059 or Kam's uncle, Ed Mooney, at Circle K in Defiance at 419-782-0001.
