ARCHBOLD " When the smoke cleared from the "Thunder Dome" at Archbold on Saturday, it was the hosts that were left standing. The Blue Streaks worked their way to a perfect 5-0 finish to claim the team title at the annual Chuck Forward Duals. "It's nice (to win the team trophy)," explained Archbold head coach Brian, Becher. "No matter what tournament you want to win, But at the same time the more important thing is getting better and I think some of our guys are doing that." Coldwater was the tournament runner-up with a 4-1 mark while Edgerton and Defiance both finished with 3-2 marks, with the maroon-and-gold Bulldogs claiming third place thanks to a 39-33 head-to-head victory over DHS.
"Tyler Short is wrestling the best on our team right now," lauded Becher. "He's the type of kid that I wish I had a few more of."
"I just tried to come in and be aggressive and wrestle hard," said Greutman on his philosophy coming into Saturday. "I did that and I was able to come out on top. The key was just coming out and being aggressive."
"I wasn't expecting to go 5-0, I just wanted to come in and do my best today," Jimenez said. Montpelier's big man Chase Howard was also perfect, turning in three pins as well. "I think today is only going to make me better," pointed out Howard. "It's going to help get me get ready for the rest of the season and hopefully it will help me finish out the season strong." At the other end of the spectrum, Defiance sophomore 112-pounder B.J. Miller kept his record perfect not just for Saturday, but for the entire season. Miller, who picked up a pair of pins and upped his season mark to 27-0 thanks to his 5-0 effort. The other undefeated wrestler in the gym, Nick Uhlenhake, of Coldwater, also added five wins to his total as he upped his record to 32-0.
"The key was coming out and getting the takedowns," said Ferguson. "It's nice to go 5-0 and this helps give me confidence, but I always know I can improve." In the middle, Tinora freshman Jake Hancock stepped up big for the Rams and pinned four of his five opponents. The Rams' Blake boys Tom (145) and Rob (189) were also perfect. "I came out here just looking to get some good matches," admitted Hancock. "But I came out doing a lot better than I thought I would. For a freshman I didn't think I'd do this well, but this is definitely going to give more confidence the rest of the season."
"I'm pretty happy," said Yarnell, who was the third Bulldog to pull off a 5-0 day while also recording two sticks. "I came into today not even knowing if I could wrestle. I sort of came in timid today, so I wasn't expecting (5-0), but I'm definitely happy." Although not perfect, Defiance's Clay Roehrig earned four wins, three via pin. Team Finishes
