Defiance County commissioners appointed a new county Job and Family Services director during their Thursday meeting.

Former two-term Fulton County Commissioner Jack Graf was hired on at an annual salary of $58,300.

Graf has been serving as interim director since early this year when he replaced Dennis McKay.

At the time, McKay was suspended without pay due to a grand jury felony indictment in February. Although that charge was recently dismissed, McKay resigned from his position.

"We think Jack will be a good asset to the county," said Defiance County Commissioner Otto Nicely. "He's never had the experience of Job and Family Services, so this will give us a fresh look on some of the issues that go on with the state."

According to Nicely, Graf has had much experience handling personnel in the private sector.

An attempt to contact Graf for comment this morning was unsuccessful.

In another matter, commissioners opened bids on reroofing projects at Evergreen Lane Office Complex and the county airport.

Bids for the Evergreen Lane project were received from Richland Co. & Associates Inc., Defiance, and Bo-Dec Inc., Archbold. Richland Co. offered a base bid of $70,327, while Bo-Dec's base bid quote was $111,426.

The engineer's estimate was $65,000.

Bids were also opened for two roofing projects at two airport buildings.

Estimates for both buildings were received from E. Lee Construction Inc., Delphos, $45,930; West Roofing Systems Inc., Lagrange, $57,980; and Bo-Dec, $85,762. Roehrig Painting LLC, Defiance, offered a quote of $14,920 for one of the two buildings but did not bid on the other project.

The engineer's estimate for both airport projects was $60,000.

In other business, commissioners:

-- learned from county administrator Becky Wagner that United Way of Defiance County will be sponsoring a "back to school supplies drive" to provide needy county students with school supplies. United Way can be reached at 419-782-3510 for more information.

-- received landfill manager Tim Houck's June report. The sales total was $370,344 while 10,496 tons of waste were handled, compared to 11,941 tons in the same month last year. Some 208,677 gallons of leachate were collected.

-- met with Ken Keller of First Insurance and Investments to review the six-month report for health insurance.

-- approved the purchase of a senior center meal delivery vehicle from Mark Moats Ford Inc., for $28,787.
