From staff reports

Tyler Burgoon of Defiance has been named the Division II Player of the Year in the state of Ohio.

In earning first team all-Ohio status, Burgoon joins teammate Cameron Stykemain who was also named first team in Division II. It's the first time ever at Defiance that two players have been named first team all-Ohio in the same season.

In addition, Preston Zachrich of Ayersville earned first team all-Ohio honors in Division III as did Jared Yoder of Fairview in voting by the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Kolbrin Vitek of Bryan and Ross Guisinger of Kalida were second team all-Ohio this season in Division II and IV, respectively, while Evan Brown of Stryker was named honorable mention in D-IV.

Burgoon, a senior right-hander for Defiance, finished the year 11-0 with a 0.67 ERA. In 72 2/3 innings, Burgoon struck out 122 and walked just 23. At the plate, Burgoon finished the year batting .420 with 3 home runs, 20 RBI, 44 runs scored and 28 stolen bases.

"It's a bit of a surprise, I definitely wasn't expecting anything like that," said Burgoon, who helped lead Defiance to an outright Western Buckeye League title, a berth at regionals and to a final record of 28-4. "It's definitely a great honor, but I know you can't do something like that without great teammates and great coaches like we have here. I have to give a lot of thanks to them."

"Tyler is very deserving of being Player of the Year in Division II and his numbers show that," stated Defiance head baseball coach Tom Held. "He goes down as another one of the great ones who have represented Defiance High School very well. His work ethic is second to none and the truth is, he had a great season."

Stykemain, an outfielder/pitcher, set the school record for stolen bases this season with 30 and tied the school record for RBI with 41 in leading DHS in hitting with .455 average. Stykemain finished the year with 11 doubles, 5 triples and 35 runs scored.

"It's shocking really," said Stykemain. "It's good to know that I put up numbers that competed with the best players in Ohio, but it's not something I expected at all. It was a good year and the records were nice, but someday they'll be broken. What was most important was helping the team have success and winning games. I would just like to thank my parents, coaches and teammates."

"Cam had one of the most productive seasons numbers-wise of any player we've had here at Defiance," said Held. "Cam is a three-sport guy so what's really impressive is the fact that he was able to come in and get two school records like he did this year and lead us in hitting. What a great job. He just did the job day in and day out for us."

Zachrich, a junior left-hander, finished the year 9-1 in helping lead the Pilots to the Green Meadows Conference title, a berth in the regionals and a record of 20-6. In 57 1/3 innings, Zachrich struck out 85. He threw two no-hitters and finished with a 2.19 ERA. At the plate, Zachrich batted .449 with 7 doubles and 20 RBI.

"It's an honor. It's great to see all the hard work and all that we did in practice pay off," said Zachrich. "I just tried my hardest every time out this year. The keys for me were pretty much my fastball and having good location and hitting my spots. But it helps out knowing that you have good teammates that can back you up and then score runs for you."

"This is a great honor for him and the school and it speaks of our program that people recognize that we can play quality baseball here at Ayersville," stated Pilot mentor Steve Yenser. "I'm really proud of him.

"Unfortunately what it probably does is put a target on his back, you know, now what is he going to do (for an encore)? But it's definitely a good thing for him. I'm really pleased for him and he did great job."

Yoder finished the year batting .466 for Fairview, which finished the year 16-4 overall. Yoder scored 25 runs and finished with 7 doubles, 2 triples and 5 home runs.
