SHERWOOD -- The major topic of discussion for members of the Central Local Board of Education on Tuesday was efforts by school officials across the state to help obtain petition signatures to place a constitutional amendment on the November ballot that would declare education a fundamental right of every Ohio student.

Numerous Ohio school officials and staff are attempting to get signatures on a petition to place the proposed amendment on election ballots statewide for the Nov. 6 general election.

The education amendment drive is spearheaded by the Getting it Right for Ohio's Future organization.

Although nothing was voted on at the meeting regarding the amendment proposal, superintendent David Bagley provided board members with petitions and urged them to obtain signatures from concerned voters.

The amendment, according to Getting it Right for Ohio's Future, would, in part, require the state to pay a higher portion of the cost of education, reduce the number of new local levies and cut property taxes for senior and disabled homeowners.

Despite the state's method of school funding being declared unconstitutional more than a decade ago, many believe that very little has changed.

In other business, the board:

-- passed a resolution thanking school district residents who approved the emergency renewal levy on the May 8 ballot. The levy generates $615,000 annually, the same amount generated when the levy was first approved in 1986.

-- commended senior class valedictorian Brandon Meyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Meyer, and salutatorian Amanda Shetler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Duane Shetler.

-- regretfully accepted the retirement resignation of high school custodian James Flory, effective July 21.

-- approved the employment of all fall and winter sports coaches, all of whom are returning from last year.

-- okayed bus transportation, if needed, to Four County Career Center summer school programs. Bus transportation will be determined by the number of students signed up to ride the first day of each session. The board also employed Patricia Rensberger as bus driver. Summer school sessions will run June 11-28 and July 9-26.

-- approved the new school policy book as rewritten by NEOLA, an agency working to update school policies throughout Ohio and bring them up to state guidelines.

-- approved the high school secretary's job calendar.
