NAPOLEON - Napoleon's offense set the tone early in the season opener against Defiance at Loose Field on Saturday and the Wildcats defended their home turf with a 10-0 triumph.
Nick Daman and Brett Lauf each finished with hat tricks for Napoleon (1-0) while Alaric Ashbaugh and Avery DelFavero combined for an eight-save shutout.
"We played really well and the boys were up for it, they always get up for Defiance," remarked Napoleon coach Chris DelFavero. "We played pretty well this off-season, we had a good off-season. We have a decent amount of seniors and some decent underclassmen and it all came together."
Nick Lange intercepted a pass and dribbled inside the 18 for Napoleon's first goal and Daman connected with Lauf for the second one as the two quick goals inside the first 10 minutes had the 'Cats off and running and Defiance scrambling for an answer.
Napoleon added four more first-half goals and finished with six players scoring on the night.
"Our passing was excellent I thought," added DelFavero. "We really moved the ball around a lot, played the ball wide a lot, which opened things up. We played with a lot of emotion and intensity which was nice to see. All the kids played hard the whole game."
Dallas Salazar finished with nine saves for the Bulldogs.
Defiance (0-1) will have a few days to regroup before hosting Kalida at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
"Napoleon is a tough team to be up against," said DHS coach Eric Burns. "We have got a lot of work to do. I believe that this group of guys has a lot of potential, and if we can come together as a team and learn from our mistakes, we might be able to turn this season around."
