COLUMBUS — Antonio Woods led a trio of players in double figures for Cincinnati Summit Country Day as the Silver Knights advanced to the Division III state championship following a 49-41 victory over St. Peter Bedford Chanel in front of a sparse crowd on Thursday afternoon at Value City Arena.
The good news for the Silver Knights (25-1) is they’ll be playing against either Ottawa-Glandorf or Portsmouth for the D-III state championship on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The bad news is that Woods was helped off the court in the final minute of the contest after an apparent knee injury.
“He’s a tough kid, I’m sure if he can go he’ll go,” said Country Day mentor Michael Bradley about Woods (5-11, soph).
Woods finished with 12 points to lead the Knights, who outscored the Firebirds (23-4) in each of the first three quarters in the victory. Holden Hartzell (6-5, senior) and Kevin Johnson (6-2, junior) each scored 10 points, with Johnson grabbing a team-high nine rebounds in the victory.
“We give up 36 points a game on the season, we just always try to be in help position and apply pressure,” said Bradley. “I think we’re one of the better conditioned teams in the state. Defensively I thought we were pretty good again tonight.”
Damon Jones (6-0, senior), a first team all-Ohio selection in D-III, was held to just four points in the loss for Bedford Chanel, 11 points under his season average of 15.1 ppg.
“They’re one of the better teams we’ve played. They’ve got nice balance, their guards do their thing and that creates space inside for the big guys,” said Bedford Chanel coach Hugh McMahon.
Kyree Brewer (6-5, senior) finished with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Firebirds. Ishmael Hargrove (6-4, soph.) also had 13 points.
