Boys state basketball poll: Defiance, Edgerton each finish No. 3 in respective divisions

Published:

Defiance finished third in the state in Division II in the final Ohio high school boys basketball ratings from Associated Press. It marks the highest finish in school history for DHS.

"It is an honor for our team to be there in the final poll .... and great recognition for our guys who have put a lot of hard work and effort into the season," Defiance coach Kirk Lehman said. "Again, I think it is one of those things that will be appreciated even more as time goes on, but a very good accomplishment especially for a group of seniors that have worked as hard as this group."

The Bulldogs, 19-0 on the season heading into Friday's game with Elida, had one first-place vote and 152 total points to place behind poll champion Dayton Dunbar and Alliance. Wauseon, with just two losses on the season including one to Defiance, finished 12th in the last D-II ratings.

Edgerton was also ranked third in Division IV in the final poll. Matt Ripke's crew, like Defiance 19-0, had two first-place votes and 155 points to come in third behind top-ranked Jackson Center and number two Berlin Hiland, the defending state champs that suffered their first loss of the season last week.

"It is nice to be recognized on the state level for all the hard work our kids and coaching staff put in throughout the season," Ripke said. "They are very deserving, but at the same time we are focused on finishing the regular season on Thursday (at home with Delta), then turning our attention to the second season beginning next week."

Columbus Northland in Division I and Bloom-Carroll in Division III are the other teams voted best in the state for the 2011-12 season by a panel of sports writers and broadcasters for the Associated Press.
