Boys state basketball poll: Defiance up to third in latest AP poll

Published:

Defiance moved up to third in the latest Associated Press Ohio high school boys basketball ratings released on Tuesday night. It marks the highest any DHS basketball team has ever been ranked in a poll, beating the previous top mark of fourth set this year and in 1994.

"Obviously we want to be there at the end of the year, but this is a nice honor for our guys and where our program has gotten," Defiance coach Kirk Lehman said. "It's taken sacrifice from a lot of players over the years, but it's great to say on a given week we're number three. There's a lot of work to be done, but to see Defiance up there with the top teams in the state is a good feeling."

The Bulldogs, fourth in the rankings a week ago, recorded one first-place vote and 203 total points in placing behind a pair of unbeatens, Dayton Dunbar and Alliance. Franklin is fifth and Cincinnati Taft sixth with Jonathan Alder, third last week, dropping to sixth after suffering its first defeat of the season.

Another Bulldog squad, Edgerton, also moved from fourth to third in the Division IV ratings. Like Defiance at 15-0, Edgerton had one first-place vote and 205 points to rank behind Berlin Hiland and second-rated Jackson Center.

Leipsic is the only other team in the six-county area to get ranked at 11th in D-IV.

Columbus Northland in Division I and Bloom-Carroll in Division III are the other top-rated teams in the fifth of seven weekly polls released by Associated Press.
