ARCHBOLD -- Napoleon got off to a good start during the first day of action at the Division II sectional tennis tournament at Archbold.

The Napoleon doubles teams of Alayna Schlade and Liz Yarnell, as well as Rachel Niermann and Addie Small, both qualified for districts. Danielle Parker of Napoleon advanced to the quarterfinals in singles action before falling to Rochell Issa of Maumee Valley Country Day.

Meanwhile, Defiance earned a couple of wins on the day, including one by Kristine Shannon at singles and Hannah Lamb and Cindy Davis at doubles, but the Bulldogs failed to advance anyone to districts.

Wauseon had both of its doubles teams, Ashley King and Chelsea Ward, and Taylor Eberly and Sally Frank, win one match before being eliminated but Samantha Carr moved on to districts in singles with three wins.

Bryan's Erin McDonagh also advanced to districts in singles.

The semifinals and finals will be held Saturday morning at Archbold. The top four singles and doubles teams advance to the district tournament at the University of Findlay on Oct. 12 and 15.

• Boys Soccer

Hat trick for Herrett: Behind a hat track from Doug Herrett, the Defiance boys soccer team rolled to its first Western Buckeye League win of the season, a 6-1 road victory over Kenton.

Austin Fraley added two goals and an assist for the Bulldogs, which improved to 4-7-2 on the season while moving to 1-5-2 in the WBL. Tyler Rogers also scored for Defiance, which outshot Kenton, 24-4.

"Today was a great game to play everybody. We controlled the game from the 20-minute mark in the first half on," said a happy Defiance mentor Carlos Lopez. "All of our set-up plays worked today which was great to see."

Taylor Martell scored for Kenton (2-12, 0-7 WBL).

Defiance returns to action Monday at Kalida.

• Girls Soccer

DHS ties Kenton: Defiance and Kenton dueled to a 3-3 tie on Thursday in girls Western Buckeye League soccer action at Defiance.

Emily Spencer paced the Bulldogs, now 4-8-1 on the campaign and 1-6-1 in the WBL, with a pair of goals, while Cori Hybart added another as the team amassed 35 shots on goal.

Brittany Froelich made three saves in goal for the Lady Bulldogs.

Terrill Webb led the Wildcats (5-8-1, 1-5-1 WBL) with a pair of goals.

The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday at home against Elida at 7 p.m.
