Bishop Donnelly dies at 83

TOLEDO -- Retired auxiliary bishop of the Toledo Catholic Diocese, Rev. Robert W. Donnelly, died Monday in his home in Toledo, according to an article in the diocese online newspaper Catholic Chronicle.

Donnelly, who was 83, was ordained auxiliary bishop for Toledo on May 3, 1984. He served the Diocese of Toledo -- which includes the Defiance six-county area -- as vicar general from 1983-2003 and diocesan administrator between Bishop James R. Hoffman's death in February 2003 and Bishop Leonard P. Blair's appointment in December 2003.

Donnelly retired in 2006 after 49 years of service in the diocese, including 22 as auxiliary bishop. He was assistant pastor at Fostoria St. Wendelin (1957-65), Toledo St. Charles (1965-67) and Toledo St. Clement (1967-70). He served as pastor at Landeck St. John (1970-74), Spencerville St. Patrick (1970-74) and Sandusky St. Mary (1974-81).

Funeral arrangements are pending.
