Garden Ridge to charge for what was free service

The free service that Garden Ridge Nursery had offered for the disposal of grass clippings and leaves will be no more in a couple days. Beginning Thursday, Garden Ridge will start charging for taking those materials due to increased operating costs, according to owner Jerry Richter. Richter said in March that his business would take grass and leaves at no charge when Defiance city officials announced the closing of their Winn Road compost site as a cost-savings measure. But starting Thursday, Richter said Garden Ridge will charge $1 per garbage bag for lawn and yard waste or $5 per cubic yard, whichever is less.
