Area bakers, has your family been telling you that you make the best cupcakes ever? Did you ever suspect they were just being nice to you and you would really like to know if your cupcakes are that good?
Then enter your cupcake recipe in the Cupcake Contest in the 2013 Recipe Challenge, sponsored by The Crescent-News. In addition to the new category of the Cupcake Contest, there are five categories that cooks can enter to show off their culinary abilities and win prizes.
The categories are: appetizers & snacks; entrees; salads & sides; soups, stews & chili; and desserts. Only one entry per category will be accepted, but entries can be made in multiple categories, if the cook so desires. The deadline for all recipe entries is Monday, Sept. 30.
Five finalists in each category will be chosen by three judges, and a special judge with a pastry background for the Cupcake Contest, on Monday, Oct. 7. The Recipe Challenge for the finalists will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 413 E. Second St., Defiance. All recipes will be published online on Tuesday, Nov. 5. The winning recipes, photos of the finalists and the winners, and as many recipes as space allows will be published in The Crescent-News Cookbook on Nov. 5.
The grand prize winner will receive $125; $50 will go to the runner-up. First place winner in each category will receive $35 and second place winner will receive $25. Recipes must be original or significantly altered from previously published recipes. Recipes will be judged on taste, uniqueness, texture and ease of preparation. Finalists in the Recipe Challenge must attend the final event on Oct. 15.
The Cupcake Contest will be a true test of the culinary art of baking as participants cannot use boxed cake mixes or canned frosting mixes. The cupcakes and frosting must be made from scratch. Cupcakes will be judged on originality, texture, presentation and flavor. Some examples of unusual cupcakes might be those that incorporate root beer, champagne, espresso, Kool-Aid, bits of cookies such as Oreos, small pieces of candy such as M&Ms, or various kinds of fruit such as cherries or blueberries.
Those bakers entering the Cupcake Contest will bring four of their cupcakes to The Crescent-News on Monday, Oct. 7, by 5 p.m., to be evaluated by the special judge. She will then choose five finalists that evening to compete in the final Recipe Challenge on Oct. 15. The winning prize in the Cupcake Contest will be $35, with $25 for second place.
Recipes can be mailed to Recipe Contest, The Crescent-News, P.O. Box 249, Defiance OH 43512. Entries can also be emailed to: firstname.lastname@example.org. Contestants are strongly urged to enter their recipes online, if possible. One entry per category is the rule with photo copies accepted. Please type or print entries.
