NAVASOTA, Texas -- Robert Derril Cook, 92, died peacefully in his sleep at home at 8:06 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2014.
Robert, born Sept. 2, 1921, was one of seven siblings, born to Robert Welty Cook and Augusta Cole Cook, 525 S. Main St., Hicksville. Robert was a member of the Hicksville High School graduating class of 1940, the first senior class to graduate in the new Hicksville High School, located on Smith Street. Robert D. Cook served as S/Sgt. during his four years in the U.S. Army Air Corps World War II 811 AAFBU. On March 27, 1946, he married Ruth Ellen Coskey in Kansas City, Kan.
After World War II, Robert returned to his hometown and took over the operation of his father's scrap iron and metal business on South Main St. He served several terms on the Hicksville Water Board. He also served one term (1980-84) as mayor of the village of Hicksville. He took great pride in his contributions to the improvement of the village when he was mayor. He was a life member of the American Legion, having served as a commander of Post 223, as well as a life member and past president of the local Grand Aerie-Fraternal Order of Eagles. In addition, he was very active in the high school alumni association and also served one year as its president.
His parents, Robert Welty and Augusta Cole Cook; and three brothers, Gerald Cook, Carl Cook and George Cook, preceded him in death.
He is survived by wife, Ruth; and four children, Bobbie Lynn Cook (Scott) Krause of Cornelia, Ga., Beth Ellen Cook Taraschke of Alpharetta, Ga., Donald Cook of Navasota, Texas, and Buff Colette Cook (Ron) Burns, Fort Collins, Colo.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren, as well as three sisters, Maude Cook Straley, Betty Cook Snyder and Alice Cook White.
