OAKWOOD -- James "Jim" A. Batt, 71, of Oakwood, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2014, in his home.
Jim was born in Defiance, Ohio, on June 13, 1942, the son of the late Al and Helen (Justinger) Batt. On November 12, 1966, he married Bonnie (Strable) Batt, who died February 26, 2013. Jim was an Army veteran and served overseas in Korea. He had worked as a heavy equipment operator for Baker Schindler Contracting, Miller Brothers and Webb Brothers. He was an avid deer hunter, farmer and enjoyed working on equipment and vehicles. Jim was a life member of VFW Post 3360, Emerald-Auglaize Fox Club, Operators Union 18, and St. Mary's Junction Catholic Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Belinda (Kent) Laney of Defiance; son, Jeremy "J.J." (Katie) Batt of Oakwood; sisters, Patricia Walter of Defiance, Kathleen Boyd of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Mary (Stan) Fitzenrider-Cox of Defiance; brothers, Eugene (Marge) Batt of Defiance, Dennis (Shirley) Batt of Hoisington, Kansas, Fred Batt of Defiance; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie; daughter Nicole "Nicki" Batt; a sister, Carolyn Leonard; brothers, Victor, Paul, Jerome, Ronald, Harold and Thomas.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John Catholic Church, Defiance, Ohio, at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 10, with Father John Stites officiating. Friends are invited to call Friday from 2-8 p.m. and an hour before services Saturday at the Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home, Defiance. Burial will be in Sherman Cemetery, Brown Township, where VFW Post 3360 will conduct honorary military rites.
