Alberta H. Gilliam, 91, of Defiance, Ohio, passed away Monday, April 14, 2014, at CHP Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center.

She was born in Defiance, Ohio, on June 25, 1922, the daughter of the late August and Flora Lodissa (Hurtt) Kammeyer. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and attended Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Napoleon. Alberta retired from the United Telephone Company front desk. She and her husband had owned and operated Azzar's Restaurant in Alvada, Ohio, and she had worked at the Valentine Theater and the Hotel Henry. Alberta was a volunteer at Rotary, ITPA telephone operators' charity, Filling Home volunteer, and made cancer pads for many. She loved reading and volunteering.

She is survived by five sisters, Ethel Retcher of Arthur, Barbara Bibler of Defiance, Elsie (Fred) Olinghouse of Defiance, Verona Meine of Defiance and Frances (Harry) Brown of Defiance; a brother, Larry (Marilyn) Kammeyer of Archbold; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Bert Azzar and Jim Gilliam; three sisters; Margaret Lowry, Lenora Kammeyer and Georgie Davis; five brothers Richard, Robert, Delbert, Gene and Harold Kammeyer.

Services will be at Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 17, with Pastor James Castello officiating. Friends are invited to call Wednesday from 2-8 p.m. and Thursday from 10-11 a.m. at Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home, 1753 S. Clinton St., Defiance. Entombment will be in Riverview Memory Gardens.
