James E. South, 88, of Defiance, formerly of Cridersville, Ohio, died at 12:24 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2014, at Defiance Regional Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 10, 1925, in Cridersville, Ohio, the son of Arthur and Emma (Winget) South, who preceded her in death. On Jan. 5, 1948, he married Gretchen D. Pontius, and she survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Susan (Duane) Brannon of Defiance and Jill Holley, Archbold, Ohio; four grandchildren, Katrina (Russ) Mansfield, Monica Ankney, Isaac Holley and and Beth Holley; three great-grandchildren, Morghin Ankney, K.C. Hatton and Tayhlor Casarez; and a sister, Leola Eley, Cridersville, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon South; two brothers, Lloyd South and Edgar south; and two sisters, Thelma Lee and Mildred South.
Jim worked as a meat cutter with the Lima Packing Co. and Pride of Lima Meats. He later worked at the Lima Mall and the Northtowne Mall, Defiance.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 20, 2014, at the Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance. The family will receive friends from noon until time of service Thursday at the funeral home.
