CANADOHTA LAKE, Pa. -- Joseph T. Furko Jr., 72, of Canadohta Lake, Pa., formerly of Archbold, Ohio, and Lake Havasu City, Ariz., passed away Thursday March 13, 2014, in Pittsburgh, after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Joe was born in Oakmont, Pa., on January 28, 1942, to the late Joseph T. Furko Sr. and Mary Siplive Furko. He was married for 48 years to his biggest supporter, the late Helen "Judy" Furko. He was a graduate of Springdale High School, received his undergraduate degree at Defiance College and his master's degree from the University of Saint Frances. Joe spent his adult life in the northwest Ohio communities of Archbold and Liberty Center, were he was a teacher, coach, mentor and friend to many for over 40 years. He is a member of the Liberty Center Athletic Hall of Fame, will be inducted into the Archbold Athletic Hall of Fame in the fall, and he was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for the Northwest Ohio Football Coaches Association.

Joe is survived by his daughter, Kimberly (Barkley) Loughran of Pittsburgh; son, Joseph (Brynne) Furko III of Westerville, Ohio; grandson, Joseph "JT" Furko IV; mother, Mary Furko and sister, Virginia Buehrer, both of Archbold; brother-in-law, Gary (Nancy) Graham of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; along with many loving nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife and father, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Alfred Furko; and granddaughter, Elizabeth Loughran.

There will be no visitation and the family will hold a private burial on Tuesday, March 18. A celebration of life service will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Archbold, Ohio, on April 12, at 2 p.m. This will be a casual event and an opportunity to tell all those wonderful "Joe Furko" stories.
