HICKSVILLE -- Gladys M. Smith, 76, died March 8, 2014, at Hickory Creek at Hicksville.
She was born April 27, 1937, the daughter of the late William and Velma (Isenbarger) Ross in Dekalb County, Indiana. She was a 1956 graduate of Riverdale High School, St. Joe, Indiana. On November 30, 1956, she was united in marriage to Robert E. Smith, and he survives.
Gladys worked several years at Syncro in Hicksville but devoted her life to making a home for her husband and family. She loved gardening, canning, quilting, and collecting salt and pepper shakers, thimbles and antique pencil sharpeners. For many years she was active in a women's home economic club. She was a member of the Newville Church of Christ, Newville, Indiana. She loved teaching little children in Sunday school and was the church pianist for many years. She was active in the women's group and was the official record keeper, recording births, deaths and marriages.
Gladys is survived by a daughter, Martha (Bob) Zimmerman of Hicksville; and a son, Steven of Fort Wayne. She had seven granddaughters, Nicki (Dennis) Watkins, Andrea (Wayne) McFarland, Diamond Zimmerman, Amanda (Joel) Benz, Briana (Daniel) Owens, Caitlin (Samuel) Petersen and Deanna Smith; and three great-grandchildren, Dezirae Powell, Conner McFarland and Aspen Benz. Also surviving are seven siblings, Roger (Marsha) Cook, Charlene Thorp, Illa (Walter) Prosser, Keith (Melanie) Cook, Joyce Diehl, Violet Harter and Mary Petre.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her stepfather, Charles Cook; a sister, Delores Warstler; and twin grandsons, Matthew and Michael Smith.
Visitation will be Monday from 2-5 and 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Brown Funeral Home, Hicksville. The funeral service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Forest Home Cemetery.
