Mary Zirkle

Mary E. Zirkle, 93, of Defiance, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2014, at CHP Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center.

She was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on January 11, 1921, the daughter of the late Samuel G. and Margaret Edna (Greer) Zirkle. She was a member of Zion's Lutheran Church.

She had worked as an elementary teacher at Defiance and Toledo Public Schools and retired in 1984. Mary was the secretary of the American Association of University Women for over 30 years. She worked at the schoolhouse at the Sauder Village, SPARKS and Children at Risk. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and mentored at schools. She was a member of the honorary teachers -- Alpha Delta Kappa, and a life member of the Defiance County and Ohio Retired Teachers Associations, Ohio State Alumni and University of Colorado Alumni.

Surviving are 14 nieces and nephews including William (Karen) Zirkle of Defiance and John (Jenny) Zirkle of Findlay.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Lewis, John, Samuel and Richard Zirkle; and a sister, Margaret Schwarz.

Memorial services will be at a later dater. Interment will be in Haverstock Cemetery, Zanesville, Ind.
