Reynaldo 'Ray' DeLeon Sr.


Reynaldo "Ray" S. DeLeon Sr. 79, of Defiance, passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2014, at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, Toledo.

He was born on January 6, 1935, to Jose and Gumercinda (Saenz) DeLeon in Matamoros, Mexico. On October 8, 1955, he married Joan (Juarez) DeLeon at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Fort Wayne, Ind. Ray was a member of St. John's Catholic Church. He worked at Johns Manville for 13 years and Virgil Kents Burial Vaults, before going to GM, where he retired in 1994. He coached Little League for Tiffin Township for over 12 years. Ray was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians and Ohio State. He enjoyed running road races, being outdoors, and spending time with his grandkids and family.

Reynaldo is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Joan; children, Rey (Elidia) DeLeon Jr. of South Haven, Mich., Diana DeLeon of Jackson, Mich., Teddy (Don) Colangelo of Jackson, Mich., Andy (Laura) DeLeon, Gene (Lisa) DeLeon of Kokomo, Ind., and Danny (Kristine) DeLeon of Bryan, Ohio; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Gonzalo (Beverly) DeLeon of Punta Gorda, Fla., Ramon (Abrana) DeLeon of Pleasanton, Texas, Celedonio DeLeon of Stockton, Calif., and Arturo (Mely) DeLeon of Defiance, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Renato DeLeon and Jose Guadelupe DeLeon Jr.; and a sister, Elouiza Veloquio.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2014, at St. John's Catholic Church with Father Todd Dominique officiating. Interment will follow at Riverview Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held Saturday, March 1, 2014, from 4-8 p.m. and Sunday, March 2, 2014 from 3-7 p.m. at Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, with a vigil service being held on Sunday at 3 p.m.
