CARIZZO SPRINGS, Texas -- Funeral services for Deacon Juan Sauceda, 81, of Carizzo Springs were held on Wednesday, Jan, 22, 2014, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Carrizo Springs. He died Jan. 18, 2014, at the Sister Mary Hospice in San Antonio.
Juan was born Feb. 7, 1932, to Severiano and Francisca (Carmona) Sauceda in Carrizo Springs, where he was reared. On Nov. 19, 1951, he married Elisa Costilla at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Carrizo Springs. They lived in Defiance, Ohio, for many years where Juan was employed by General Motors. Juan was ordained as a deacon in the Catholic Church on June 5, 1975.
Following his retirement, Juan and Elisa returned to live in Carrizo Springs in 1992, and rejoined Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, where he participated in various church groups: Mejores Materiales, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Las Guadalupanas and others. Juan visited the elderly and shut-ins on a weekly basis.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Elisa C. Sauceda, Carrizo Springs; a daughter, Juanita Cruz, San Antonio; three sons, Enrique Sauceda of San Antonio, Jose Sauceda of Converse and Roy Sauceda of Defiance; a sister, Lupe Resendez, Carizzo Springs; three brothers, Jose Sauceda of Hamler, Ohio, and Jesus and Dario Sauceda, both of Carizzo Springs; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.
The Most Reverend James Anthony Tamayo, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Laredo, was the celebrant for the Requiem Mass and burial was in Guadalupe No. 4 Cemetery in Carrizo Springs, under the direction of the Leonard Funeral Home, of Carrizo Springs, which is a member of the International Order of the Golden Rule.
Serving as pallbearers were Enrique Sauceda, Jose Sauceda, Roy Sauceda, David Sauceda, Lee Cruz and David Cruz.
