Jack Slagle


LIBERTY CENTER -- Jack E. Slagle, 84, of Liberty Center, passed away Thursday, January 23, 2014, at CHP Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center.

Jack was born in Delta to the late Cecil Slagle and Helen Ernsberger. Besides his parents, Jack was also preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Ida Mae (Gleckler) Slagle.

Jack is survived by his children, Karen (Jim) Savage, Terry (Julie) Slagle, Jon (Bunny) Slagle and Julie (Steve) Vorwerk; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, James Slagle; and stepfather, Glen Ernsberger.

Jack graduated from Lyons High School in 1947, and graduated from Defiance College in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division. After serving his country, he taught with the Hamler Schools as a science teacher where he also coached baseball. He later became principal with the Liberty Center Schools and was promoted to superintendent. He retired in 1981 after serving Liberty Center Local Schools for 19 years.

Jack was a member of Liberty Chapel United Methodist Church where served on several committees. He served as president of the Ohio Association of Local School Superintendents, Local Library Board and Quadco Administrative Board. Jack was also a member of the Henry County United Way board of directors. He was a member of Norweld Regional Library Board and a Cub Scout leader. He was an avid bowler, golfer, card player and gardener. Jack loved the Tigers, both Liberty Center and Detroit.

Visitation will be held at the Wright-Habegger Funeral Home, 302 East Maple Street, Liberty Center, Ohio, on Sunday, January 26, 2014, from 2-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Liberty Chapel United Methodist Church, 9-474 County Road V, Liberty Center, on Monday, January 27, at 11 a.m., with Sara Myles officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Health Professionals In-Patient Hospice Center or the Liberty Chapel United Methodist Church youth group.
