HOLGATE -- Virginia C. Dickman, 96, of Holgate, passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2013, at CHP Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center. She had been a resident of Vancrest in Holgate for several years.
She was born in Defiance County on June 24, 1917, the daughter of the late Jacob and Mary I. (Welsh) Clemens. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Defiance, the Altar and Rosary Society, the Noodle Club, Defiance Senior Center, Defiance Senior Center Poppers, Sunshine Club and the Fountain City Squares. She was an avid quilter and a very good cook and baker. She helped run the family farm and had worked at Four County and Holgate Schools cafeterias. Virginia married Walter H. Dickman on Feb. 20, 1939, and he died Sept. 11, 2005.
Surviving are four daughters, Mary Gunter of Napoleon, Carol Terry of Cassopolis, Mich., Cathy (David) Rosell of Jefferson City, Missouri, Dianna (Terry) Gathman of Hamilton, Ind.; three sons, Walter (Joann) Dickman Jr. of Gainsboro, Tenn., James (Sandra) Dickman of Napoleon, Kevin "Joe" (Paula) Dickman of Galien, Mich.; a sister, Bernice (Eugene) Westrick of Defiance; two brothers, Robert (Louise) Clemens of Holgate, Charles (Marie) Clemens of Mt. Vernon, Ohio. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 16 great-stepgrandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by six sisters, Isabel Franz, Pauline Walker, Frances Miller, Geraldine Minsel, Ruth Karmol and MaryAnn Yaw; a brother; Vincent Clemens; three brothers who died in infancy; and a son-in-law, Kenneth Gunter.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary Catholic Church, Defiance, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 4, with Father Randy Giesige officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 2-8 p.m. and 8:30-9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home, 1753 S. Clinton St., Defiance. Entombment will be in Riverview Memory Gardens mausoleum.
