Jack Palmer

Jack Harold Palmer, 60, of Defiance, passed away on December 22, 2013, at his residence.

He was born on January 28, 1953, to Harold and Anne (Chaffin) Palmer in Defiance, Ohio. On August 8, 1981, he married Chris Guilliam. Jack and Chris lived in Defiance, Ohio.

He was a 1971 graduate of Defiance High School, a 1974 graduate of the Ohio State University and a 1977 graduate of the University of Toledo, where he obtained his law degree. He practiced law in Defiance for 18 years.

He was employed at The Crescent-News from 1970-77, while in high school and college and from August 1996 until his passing on Dec. 22, 2013. He was an award-winning newspaper columnist and had been honored by many of the organizations that he covered during his newspaper career.

His greatest joy, other than his family, was his association with Defiance High School. He was a proud alumnus and a devoted supporter of all academic, athletic and artistic events.

He was a lifelong member of member of Zion's Lutheran Church, Defiance, where he served as a deacon, was on the church council and helped deliver Wednesday night church meals to community members. He also taught Sunday school, was involved in the Men's Fellowship Breakfasts and was a member of the Innkeepers.

Jack served on numerous boards including three terms on the Defiance City Board of Education; Defiance High School Athletic Hall of Fame; YMCA; Good Samaritan School, Defiance; Defiance City Hall of Fame; was past campaign chairman of the Defiance County United Way; and was on the advisory committee for "The Lutheran" magazine. He served 20 years as a Little League coach for the Defiance Baseball Association; and was a member and announcer for the Rube Band.

He was an avid Ohio State, Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians fan.

Jack is survived by his loving spouse of 32 years, Chris; a son, Bradford Harold Palmer (Chelsea Junge) of Perrysburg, Ohio; a daughter, Katharine Florence Palmer of Charlottesville, Va.; a sister, Patricia (Bruce) Palmer Crossman of Glen Burnie, Md.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Palmer; mother, Anne Palmer; and grandmother, Florence Palmer.

Visitation will be held today, December 27, 2013, from 1-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Zion's Lutheran Church in Defiance, Ohio, and also from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church on Saturday.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Zion's Lutheran Church, Defiance, Ohio, with Pastor Timothy G. Reynolds and Pastor Richard Schoenley officiating. Burial will take place in Riverside Cemetery.
