Barbara Louise Layman, 50, of rural Defiance, died Tuesday, December 17, 2013, in her home, with her loving family beside her.
She was a 1981 graduate of Fairview High School and worked at Defiance Landmark, Defiance City School and Maumee Valley RC&D. She was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Parish and its Altar Rosary Society and did the church bulletin. She enjoyed bowling on mixed doubles and ladies leagues in Defiance.
Barbara Louis Gecowets was born on February 6, 1963, the daughter of Lee L. & Mary L. (Shininger) Gecowets. She married her high school sweetheart, Donald J. Layman on October 19, 1985, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband, Don, are two daughters, Leah Marie and Rachel Louis, both at home; one sister, Janet (Jeff) Smith of Farmer; her mother, Mary L. (Lavon) Speiser of Sherwood; a grandmother, Clarice Shininger of GlennPark; her in-laws, Floyd (Janis) Layman of Ney, Don (Darcy) Layman of Bryan, Joe (Diane) Singer and Dean (Gin) Layman, both of Ney. Also surviving are 10 nieces, five nephews, one great-niece and one great-nephew.
She was preceded in death by her father, Lee, in 2002; grandparents, Henry and Audrey Gecowets and Clarence Shininger; and godfather, John Shininger.
Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Friday in the Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home, 1753 S. Clinton St., Defiance, with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will also at the church an hour before services Saturday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 21, at St. Isidore-Delaware Bend Catholic Church. Officiating will be Father Robert Kill. Burial will be at St. Stephen's Cemetery.
