MALINTA -- Melvin Henry Tietje, 89, of rural Malinta, Ohio, died Sunday evening, December 15, 2013, at The Kingston Residence, Sylvania, Ohio.
He was born April 12, 1924, in Deshler, Ohio, to the late August and Alma (Meyer) Tietje. On December 9, 1945, he married Madonna Koster and they shared over 64 years together before her death on August 26, 2010.
Melvin served his country in World War II with the U.S. Army. He was a lifetime farmer and a faithful and active member of Peace Lutheran Church, Deshler. Over the years he was also actively a member of the Bavarian Haus, Deshler; Deshler American Legion Post 316; Henry County Chapter of Ohio Farm Bureau; Tri-County Board and board member of the former Westhope School.
He is survived by children, Juleen Bischoff of Toledo, Robert Tietje and partner Roger Longrie of White Lake, Michigan, Jan (Tom) Franz of Napoleon, and Jenny (Thom) Hornish, Malinta; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by sister, Renata (Arnold) Tietje; and brother, Harvey Tietje.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Peace Lutheran Church, Deshler, with Pastor Thomas Smuda officiating. Military honors and a luncheon will immediately follow the services. Graveside services are 2 p.m. at Forest Hill Cemetery, Napoleon. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at Rodenberger Funeral Home, Deshler, and 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
