MADISON -- Dr. Gerald "Jerry" Wayne Meyers, 74, of Madison, formerly of Mentor, died Thursday, October 17, 2013, at Hospice House, Cleveland. He was born October 18, 1938, in Defiance, Ohio.
Dr. Meyers was an administrator/professor and was an original faculty member at Lakeland Commun-
ity College for 33 years (1967-2000). He was the original chairman of the social science department, course professor for thousands of students and founding director of Lakeland East. He officially retired in 1999 and continued teaching until 2001. Prior to that, he taught two years at Bethel Township in Miami County (1960-1963), and five years at Mayfield High School (1963-1967). In his education career, he completed 40 years as an educator.
Jerry graduated in 1956 from Defiance High School, where he played football and was recognized as All Ohio/All American tailback (1955). He obtained a B.S. in education (1960) and M.A. in history (1964) at Bowling Green State University. He also completed his Ed.D. in administration from the University of Akron (1978). Jerry was a member of Phi Delta Kappa/Alpha Tau Omega and past president of the Mentor Exchange Club.
Survivors include his children, Denise (William) Shaw of Mentor, Deanna Kochensparger of Mentor, Greg (Evangeline) Meyers of Fitchburg, Wis., Phillip (Emily) Meyers of Saint Charles, Mo., Theresa (Marlon) Nicks of Columbus, Ohio, and Danielle (Brian) Grospitch of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Erin (fiancé: Michael Davidow) Shaw, Lauren (Adam) McGing, Hannah Goodson, Alyssa, Megan and Rebecca Shaw, Makena, Maximos and Karina Meyers, Brian, Gavin and Caleb Nicks and Stella Meyers; great-grandson, Aiden Goodson; sister, Martha (Lawrence) Tonjes of Hicksville, Ohio; and former spouse, Gail (Stephen) Kerns of Mentor, Ohio.
Preceding Jerry in death was his wife, Patricia (Schrader) Meyers; parents, Robert A. and Ruth N. (Lower) Meyers; grandchildren, Gianna and Roger Meyers; son-in-law, Brian Goodson.
The family will receive friends today from 3-7 p.m. at Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor, Ohio 44060. The funeral service will be at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Celebration of Life and dinner will immediately follow for all family and friends.
