ARCHBOLD -- Charles "Ray" Matthews died peacefully Wednesday, June 19, 2013.
Ray was born on April 27, 1924, at Connellsville, Pa., to the late Minnie and Omer H. Matthews. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering in 1948, and began a career in mechanical engineering as a sales engineer with Westinghouse Corporation and later with General Electric, retiring after 25 years of service.
On June 30, 1951, Ray married Ann Elizabeth Kestner and they moved to Pittsburgh Pa., then to Cleveland, Ohio. After moving to Youngstown, Ohio, in 1954, their son, Mark Raymond was born. A job promotion took them to Dallas, Texas, where they enjoyed living for 32 years before retiring to Fairlawn Retirement Community in Archbold, Ohio, in 2009.
Ray was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Boardman, Ohio, and also in Dallas, Texas, serving on their boards and as an usher and greeter at both churches, totaling more than 50 years. Ray was a lifelong member of King Solomon Lodge 346 of Connellsville, Pa., and was a 32-degree Mason in the Scottish Rite of Youngstown, Ohio, where he also had a life-time membership.
Ray loved the outdoors and was an avid golfer. He always looked forward to vacations when he and his son could play golf together. He also enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips with his father and brother. Ray nurtured long-time friendships and treasured many wonderful reunions with his friends in his later years. All of his friends and family will sorely miss his presence.
