NAPOLEON -- Hilda I. Drewes, 104, of Napoleon, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 19, 2013, at the Lutheran Home in Napoleon, Ohio.
She was born on October 2, 1908, in Adams Township, Defiance County, to the late William J. and Helen (Joost) Gerken. In February of 1932, she married Arthur Meineke at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Defiance, Ohio, who preceded her in death on November 16, 1948. She later married Richard Drewes in December of 1957, who also preceded her in death in June of 1965.
She was a homemaker and a farmer, helping for years on the family farm. Drivers-by would remember her on her riding mower until just a few years ago. She was also employed at the Farmers Mutual Telephone Company in Okolona, Ohio, where she worked for 25 years. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Florida, Ohio, where she was a charter member of the Ladies Aid and the LWML. She loved quilting at the church and at home, making quilts for all of her family and many loving friends. Hilda was a member of the Henry County Hospital Auxiliary, where she worked in the hospital gift shop for many years and was also a member of the Ward L. Adams American Legion Post 454 Auxiliary. Hilda will always be remembered by her great sense of humor and her loving kindness.
She is survived by her daughters, Janice (Marvin) Rabe of Napoleon, Ohio, and Margaret (Gary) Smith of Crossville, Tennessee; grandchildren, Jennifer (Scott) Plassman, Jeff (Deb Hayes) Rabe, Randal (Jeanne) Rabe, Anette (Rev. Jeff) Shanks, Greg (Karen) Smith, Rick Smith; great grandchildren, Jason (Sabrina) Plassman, Trevor (Jessica) Plassman, Spencer Plassman, Melissa (Erik) Nelson, Elizabeth Rabe, Jordan Shanks, Josiah Shanks, Chiara Smith and Alexis Smith.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Amelia Nagel and Edna Nagel; brothers, Fred, Carl, Eldor and Victor Gerken; and a great-grandson, Michael Rabe.
Funeral services will be held at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Florida on Thursday, May 23, 2013, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Robert Azinger officiating. Interment will follow at Flatrock Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday at Rodenberger Funeral Home in Napoleon, Ohio, from 4-8 p.m., and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
