Berton 'Bert' VanZile

Berton E. "Bert" VanZile, 78, Defiance, died Sunday, April 21, 2013, at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, in Toledo, Ohio.

He was born July 8, 1934, in Metz, Ind., to George W. and Lena I (VanPelt) VanZile. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving from 1952 to 1957. He was a member of the Riverside Iowa VFW Post 6414 and a past member of the Moose Lodge. He liked to tinker in his garage and enjoyed the company of his good neighbors. Bert worked as an engineer at Moore Business Forms in Angola, then Fremont, Ohio, then Iowa City, Iowa, before retiring in 1991. He married Ann Ayers on October 24, 1957, and she passed away in April 1989.

Surviving are a son and two daughters, Paul E. VanZile of Angola, Jacquline L. VanZile of Defiance, Ohio, and Julie A. VanZile of Defiance, Ohio; a grandson, Zachary Ranshaw of Iowa City, Iowa; two sisters and a brother, Mary Lou Noll of Cincinnati, Ohio, Evelyn Gearhart of Edon, Ohio, and Orren (Helen) VanZile of Montpelier, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and two brothers, Edsel and Lorren VanZile.

Services are at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 2013, at Feller and Clark Funeral Home, 875 South Wayne Street, Waterloo, Ind. Burial will be in Waterloo Cemetery, Waterloo. Calling is for two hours prior to the service on Thursday from noon-2 p.m. at the funeral home.
