Audus Runyan

Audus R. Runyan, 80, of Defiance, passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at Mercy Defiance Hospital.

He was born on December 16, 1932, to Audus and Viola (Wyse) Runyan in Swanton. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lela (Scott) Runyan, who he married on March 20, 1955.

Audus was a member of First Church of God, Defiance. After graduation from Ney High School in 1950, he furthered his studies in education at BGSU, where he received his bachelor's degree in education in 1954, and continued at Kent State University where he received his master's degree in education in 1959. Audus taught industrial arts for one year in Britton, Michigan, two years at Ayersville High School, 10 years in the Parma City Schools District and 13 years at Defiance High School. After retirement from teaching, he worked for ODOT for 12 years. Audus operated the Homestead Restaurant and enjoyed woodworking and drawing. He and his wife vacationed in the winter in Winterhaven, Fla., for 15 years.

Audus is survived by his wife, Lela; sons, Rick Runyan (Chuck Heckler) of Rochester, N.Y., Randy (Barbara Niese) Runyan of Defiance, daughter, Renee Runyan (Terry Capizzi) of Rochester, N.Y.; grandchildren, Noah Gurney, Jacob Runyan, William Runyan and Ronnie Silver; sister, Elaine Boland of Montpelier, Ohio; brother, Dwane (Rose Ann) Runyan of Covington, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. April 13, 2013, at First Church of God, Defiance, with Rev Rick Rufenacht officiating. Burial will follow at Sherman Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. Friday at Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, and one hour prior to the funeral Saturday at the church, starting at 10 a.m.
