BRYAN -- Donald F. Wonderly, 90, of Bryan, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2013, in his residence with his family at his side.
Don was born May 4, 1922, in Mark Township, Defiance County, Ohio, the son of the late Fred and Louise (Kolb) Wonderly. He was a 1940 graduate of Mark Center High School. Don served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He married Betty J. Shutta on June 21, 1947, in Kendallville, Indiana, and she preceded him in death on September 21, 1985. Don was a welder for the ARO Corporation for 47 years. He was also a butcher at the former A&P Tea Company. He was an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. Don served on the committee that planned to build the new church on Portland Street. He served as an usher and worked on the carry-out committee for the annual festival. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1915, where he served as financial secretary for many years. Don ran the food tent for the K of C during the Bryan Jubilee for many years. He was a charter member of the Sherwood VFW Post 5665. He was also a member of the Bryan VFW Post 2489. Don and his brother, Art, were past grand marshals of the Sherwood homecoming parade. After his retirement, Don delivered meals for Meals on Wheels and he also volunteered as a Redcoat at Community Hospital in Indianapolis.
Surviving are his three children, Larry of Bryan, Marsha (Pat) Marinis of Bloomville, Ohio, and Deborah (Don) Snyder of Defiance; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Kenneth (Madonna) Wonderly of Sherwood; and one sister, Dolores Jacob of Sherwood.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; four grandchildren, Donna, Terry, Tony and Angel Snyder; two great-grandchildren, David Hodges and Taylor Snyder; and two brothers, James and Arthur Wonderly.
Funeral services for Donald F. Wonderly will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 2013, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 610 Portland Street, Bryan, with Father Jim Halleron officiating. Interment will follow in Fountain Grove Cemetery, Bryan, where military graveside rites will be accorded by the Bryan VFW Post 2489. Visitation for Donald F. Wonderly will be held today, March 22, 2013, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home-Greenisen Chapel, 225 East High Street, Bryan. Rosary services will begin at 7:30 p.m. this evening in the funeral home.
