McCLURE -- Walter W. Behnfeldt, 78, of McClure, Ohio, died Saturday, January 12, 2013, at CHP Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center, Defiance, Ohio.
He was born on May 8, 1934, in Freedom Township, to the late Henry and Emilie (Gerken) Behnfeldt. On October 12, 1957, he married Ruth (Rowland) Behnfeldt at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Napoleon.
Walter worked as a truck driver and dispatcher for Tem Cole, McClure, for 27 years. He then worked at Gerken Materials, Napoleon, for 13 years. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, McClure, where he served on church council and helped with the food pantry distribution. He delivered Meals on Wheels with his wife, Ruth for several years. He also enjoyed camping and attending his grandchildren's activities. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was a member of the Roberts-McMillen Legion Post 332 in McClure.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth; children, Scott (Pat) Behnfeldt of Napoleon, Sue (Tim) Shepard of McClure; grandchildren, Katie Shepard, Emily and Olivia Behnfeldt; brother, Eldor (Margie) Behnfeldt of Napoleon; sister, Esther Behnfeldt of Napoleon; and sister-in-law, Helga Behnfeldt of Napoleon.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Elmer, Henry, and Donald Behnfeldt; and a sister, Marie Davis; as well as an infant brother and sister.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 16, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, McClure. Interment will follow at Hockman Cemetery, McClure, where military honors will be accorded by the McClure American Legion. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. on Tuesday at Rodenberger Funeral Home, McClure, and from 10-11 a.m. on Wednesday at the church.
The family suggests memorials be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, McClure, or CHP Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center, Defiance.
