SHERWOOD -- Arthur C. Wonderly, 91, of Sherwood, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2013, at Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers, Bryan.

Art was born March 5, 1921, in Mark Township, Defiance County, Ohio, the son of the late Fred and Louise (Kolb) Wonderly. He was a 1939 graduate of Mark Center High School. Art was a World War II Army veteran. He married Rita E. Welsh on May 21, 1949, and she preceded him in death on March 3, 1962. He then married Anna C. Welsh-Mowat on November 23, 1968, and she also preceded him in death on October 17, 2000. Art was a lifelong farmer. He also worked at ARO Corp. for 41 years. He was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church, Delaware Bend, where he served on the parish council. He also belonged to the Holy Name Society at church. Art was a charter member of the Sherwood VFW Post 5665. Art served on the board of Crystal Ray Federal Credit Union. Art enjoyed camping and was a member of the Travel Master Camping Group. Arthur valued his family and enjoyed nothing more than spending quality time with all of them. He also received joy from fishing, playing golf and working his farm. Art spend 26 winters in sunny Texas.

Surviving are his five children, all of Sherwood, Greg (Lynn) Wonderly, Mark Wonderly, Neil (Jill) Wonderly, Cindy Baxter and Vickie Elser; two stepchildren, Georgie (John) Cannady of Bremerton, Washington, and Lawrence (Rita) Mowat of Greenwood, Indiana; stepdaughter-in-law, Betty Mowat of Ney; and stepson-in-law, DeWayne Polter of Sherwood; 17 grandchildren, nine stepgrandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; six great-great-stepgrandchildren; two brothers, Don Wonderly of Bryan and Kenneth "Dutch" (Madonna) Wonderly of Sherwood; and one sister, Dolores Jacob of Sherwood.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives, Rita and Anna; one son, Michael Wonderly; stepson, Gordon Mowat; stepdaughter, Sharon Polter; and one brother, James Wonderly.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, January 4, 2013, from 2-8 p.m. in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 230 East Elm Street, Sherwood. The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial for Art will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 5, 2013, in St. Isidore Catholic Church, Delaware Bend, with Father Robert Kill officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery where military graveside rites will be accorded by the Sherwood VFW Post 5665.
