CONTINENTAL -- Daphna McKibben, 94, of Continental, died at 8:55 a.m. Wednesday, November 8, 2012 at her residence.
She was born March 14, 1918, in Continental, to the late Arthur Wendell and Mary Jo (Klear) Okuley. On August 14, 1959, she married Robert McKibben and he died June 24, 2007.
Daphna was also preceded in death by her loving daughter, Renae Mae McKibben; a brother and sister-in-law, Blaine and Anita Okuley; a nephew, Reggie Okuley; and a great-great-niece.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, Connie (John) Basinger of Van Wert, Jan Okuley of Continental, Kim (Suzanne) Okuley of Continental, Tana (David) DeMoss of Delaware and Travis (Kieu) Okuley of Continental; 17 great- and 12 great-great-nieces and nephews.
Daphna taught business, English and music at Continental School for 30 years, taught for one year at Miller City and had been a substitute teacher for 13 years. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Continental, where she played organ for 64 years and was a member of the Altar Rosary Society and Catholic Ladies of Columbia. She was a 1936 graduate of Continental High School where she was valedictorian, played saxophone in the band, sang and played piano for the Glee Club and was secretary and treasurer of her class. She was a graduate of Ohio Northern University with a double major in business education and English and a minor in music and sang in the choir for four years. She was a member of the Theda Phi Delpha and its financial secretary for four years and a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha National Sorority and the Newman Club. She was also a lifetime member of the Lima American Legion Auxiliary and the Ottawa VFW Auxiliary, the Lima Elks, Ohio Education Association and Putnam County Teachers Association.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 12, 2012, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Continental, with Father Mark Hoying officiating. Burial will follow in Monroe Cemetery, Continental. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m Sunday at Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Continental, where there will be a scripture at 2 p.m. Visitation will also be one hour prior to mass at the church on Monday.
