Betty Bartley Smith, 77, of Defiance, died at 11:01 p.m. Monday, October 22, 2012, at Brookview Healthcare Center, Defiance, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born March 29, 1935, in Dungannon, Va., to the late Otis M. and Gladys V. (McClellan) Nash. In February 1992, she married Robert K. Smith, who died in July of 2005. She had formerly been married to James A. Bartley.
She is survived by six children, Tamara (Chuck) Geren of Continental, Roger Nash of Delta, Ted Bartley of Defiance, Ronnie (Louraine) Bartley of Ormond Beach, Fla., Mike (Chris) Bartley of Defiance, and Bobby (Stacy) Bartley of Defiance; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Shirley Bowling of Louisville, Ky., Helen (Bernard) Melemai of Waianae, Hawaii, and June (David) Suddreth of York, S.C.; and a brother-in-law, Nelson Bergman of Ney.
She was also preceded in death by a son, James A. Bartley Jr.; a brother, Paul Nash; a sister, Beulah Bergman; and a brother-in-law, Seth Bowling.
Betty was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant View Missionary Baptist Church in Junction. She was also a member of the Brookview bingo club and an avid gardener. Betty was a loving mother, granny, sister and a friend to many.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 26, 2012, at Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Continental, with Rev. Terry Brock officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. on Thursday and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home.
