ARCHBOLD -- Eldor Volkman, 91, of Archbold, Ohio, and formerly of Deshler, Ohio, died Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at Fairlawn Haven, Archbold.
He was born in Freedom Township, Henry County, Ohio, to John and Katherine (Gerken) Volkman. On February 21, 1950, he joyfully married Janet Norden at St. John Lutheran Church, Freedom Township. At an early age, Eldor began farming with his father. He continued to farm and also started his own business, Volkman Farm Service of Deshler, which he owned for over 30 years. He was also a custom applicator for Landmark/Farm Bureau, Napoleon.
Eldor enlisted in the U.S. Navy and bravely served his country during World War II in the European theater as well as the South Pacific. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Deshler, where he was a former church council member and Sunday school superintendent. He was also a member of the Deshler American Legion Post 316; a member and former treasurer of the Bavarian Club, Deshler; a founding member of Henry County Soil & Water Conservation Board; and a member of the Henry County Farm Bureau.
Eldor and Janet enjoyed lots of traveling and vacationing in their Airstream motor home. He was formerly the treasurer and president of his local chapter of the WBCCI Airstream Club. He will be remembered by all for his friendly, "people-oriented" personality and his unique sense of humor.
Eldor is survived by his wife of 62 years, Janet; children, Daniel (Paula) Volkman of Deshler, Linda (Tom) Volkman-Meyers of Culver City, California, and Dean (Deb) Volkman, Deshler, four grandchildren, Brian and Tiffany, Sarah and Brent; three great-grandchildren, Brayden, Brant and Logan; and sister-in-law, Betty Aschilman, Archbold.
Eldor was preceded in death by his brother, Norman Volkman; and sisters: Emilia Sonnenberg, Laura Bostelman and Pauline Sonnenberg; as well as two grandchildren, Diana and Dawn.
Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Thursday, October 18, at Rodenberger Funeral Home, Napoleon, and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday at the church prior to the services. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Deshler, with Pastor Christina Seibel officiating. Graveside services with military honors will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Deshler.
