Betty Tonjes


SHERWOOD -- Betty M. Tonjes, 89 years, of rural Sherwood, passed away Sunday, October 7, 2012, in her residence with her family at her side and under the care of CHWC Hospital Hospice.

Betty was born September 14, 1923, in Delaware Township, Defiance County, Ohio, the daughter of Charles and Gladys (Kuhn) Dell. She married Raymond John Tonjes on May 27, 1944, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sherwood, and he preceded her in death on June 27, 2001. Betty was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker, always caring for her family and assisting her husband, Raymond, on the family farm. She was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sherwood. Betty also was a 4-H advisor for over 10 years.

Surviving are her four children, Mark (Christine) Tonjes of Sherwood, Kathy (Howard) Parker of Vermilion, Ohio, John (Marlene) Tonjes of Mark Center and Mary Dietrick of Shelbyville, Kentucky; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson; one brother, John (Mary) Dell of Sherwood; and one sister, Sylvia Culler of Edon, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond; one daughter, Martha Hart; and one brother, Vernon Dell.

Funeral services for Betty Marie Tonjes will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 13, 2012, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 09088 Openlander Road, Sherwood, with Pastor Mark DeLassus officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Cemetery. Visitation for Betty will be held from 2-7 p.m. Friday, October 12, 2012, at the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 230 East Elm Street, Sherwood. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.
