SHERWOOD -- Virginia N. Williams, 84, of Sherwood, passed away Saturday, September 29, 2012, at her home, surrounded by her family.

Virginia was born October 6, 1927, in Pikeville, Kentucky, the daughter of the late James and Ida (Compton) McCowan. She married Cecil Clate Williams in November 1945, and he preceded her in death on February 15, 1992. Virginia was a stay-at-home mother who delighted in her family and her garden, especially her flowers. She was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Defiance.

Surviving are five children, Lonnie (Mary) Williams of Cecil, Larry (Linny) Williams of Sherwood, Carter Williams of Cecil, Randall Williams of Duffield, Virginia, and Wanda "Denise" (Jerry) Brown of Sherwood; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Evelyn (Herb) Lee of Coburn, Virginia, Eula (Junior) Fields of Bluefield, West Virginia, Pauline Rose of Richmond, Virginia, and Amanda Voirol of Charlottesville, Virginia; one brother, Ralph McCowan of Clintwood, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Barbara Woodring; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Faye, Margaret and Patricia; three brothers, Bryan, Robert and Buddy McCowan.

A celebration of life service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 3, 2012, at St. John United Church of Christ, 950 Webster Street, Defiance. Interment will be made in Sherwood Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 230 East Elm Street, Sherwood, Ohio.
