Betty Lenhart Schlembach will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C., on Friday, Oct. 5.

Attending the ceremony from Defiance will be Rita Brown (sister of Betty), Joan and Tom Elberson (sister of Betty), and Emilie Lenhart (sister-in-law of Betty). Betty is also the sister of the late Dr. Ben Lenhart, Nancy Ducatt, and a sister of the late Dr. Francis Lenhart.

Betty, who lived to be 90, was one of the 12 children of Frank and Clara Lenhart, St. Michael's Ridge. Betty grew up at St. Michael's on the family farm, which the Lenhart family still owns. She graduated from Jewell High School and Defiance College and became a nurse.

She met and married John Schlembach and they had three sons. John's father and uncle owned and ran a hardware store in Defiance for many years. There is a stained-glass window at St. John Catholic Church in Defiance with the names John and Joseph Schlembach engraved on the window.

John became a lieutenant commander in the Navy during World War II. He commanded a destroyer in the Pacific during that war.

John passed away some years ago and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Betty will be buried next to him on Oct. 5.
