Robert Layman

Robert L. Layman, age 80 years, of Defiance, passed away Thursday morning, September 20, 2012, at the ProMedica Defiance Regional Medical Center.

He was born June 13, 1932, in Ridgeville Township, the son of Lawrence and Ruth (Meyer) Layman. A resident of the Defiance area several years, he worked at LaChoy Food Products in Archbold for over 40 years and since worked in ground maintenance at Defiance College several years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, and was a member of the American Legion Post #454 in Ridgeville Corners. He was a long time 4-H advisor, bowler, little league baseball coach, and loved the Detroit Tigers.

He is survived by two children, Michael Layman of Napoleon and Michele Layman of Syracuse, Ind.; three grandchildren, Amanda Vanderford, Brianna Lindsey and Ryan Lindsey; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, James and a sister, Virginia Wesche.

Services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at Short Funeral Home in Archbold with Rev. David Brobston officiating. Interment will follow in the Locust Grove Cemetery in Ridgeville Corners with military honors by American Legion Post #454. Friends may call in the funeral home from 4-6 p.m. today.

The family suggests that memorials be given to American Lung Association, American Cancer Society, Relay for Life, or St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Online condolences may be left at www.ShortFuneralHome.com.
