Melvin Wayne Baxter, 71, of Defiance, passed away on September 7, 2012, at the CHP Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center.
He was born on April 6, 1941, to Clarence and Nina (McDonald) Baxter in Orabille, Ind. Melvin worked for GM for 25 years, primarily as a fork truck driver, retiring in 1997. He also worked for Defiance Grocery Company, Dinner Bell, and Ken's Furniture. After retiring from GM, he transported patients for the Defiance County Veteran's Service Commission and received their Golden Chariot Award for his dedication to the Armed Forces Veterans of Defiance County in 1999.
On October 4, 1963, he married Grace Porter at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Defiance, Ohio. Mel was a life member of VFW Post 3360, a life member of the AMVETS, and a member of the Vietnam Veterans Association. He was also an avid NASCAR fan, Cincinnati Reds fan, and a fan of his five grandsons, who he loved very much.
Melvin is survived by his loving spouse of 48 years, Grace; son, Kevin Baxter of Defiance, son, Keith (Paula) Baxter of West Chester, Ohio; sister, Karen Bice of Whitehouse, Tenn.; sister, Rita (Phil) Weimer of Kendallville, Ind.; brother, Loren (Mary) Baxter of Hicksville, Ohio, brother, Lynn (Fran) Platt of Hicksvill; grandchildren, Kendyl, Kobe, Zachary, Benjamin and Charles Baxter.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Nina McDonald; father, Clarence Baxter; brother, Jerry Baxter.
Visitation will be held Monday, September 10, 2012, from 2-8 p.m. at Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Inc., Defiance, Ohio. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 11, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Rev. David Brobston officiating. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery with military honors being performed by VFW Post 3360.
