George E. Shannon, 89, of Defiance, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2012, at GlennPark of Defiance.
He was born March 12, 1923, in a farm house near Stryker, Ohio. He was the son of the late Elmer and Matilda (Mack) Shannon. He married Mary B. Hetz on September 28, 1946, and enjoyed 65 years of marriage.
George is survived by his wife, Mary "Bernadine"; three sons, Mike (Marilyn) in Bryan, Ohio, Denny (Kathy) in Archbold, Ohio, and Tom (Lisa) in Ada, Mich.; and daughter-in-law, MaryJo Shannon, in Avon, Ohio. He has 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Greg, who lived in Avon Lake, Ohio, on Jan. 31, 2009. He was also preceded in death by all nine of his brothers and sisters, Bob (Mildred), Don (Thelma), Paul (JoAnne), Harold (Vivian), Chuck (Phyllis), Irvin, Arlene (Dale) Calvin, Mildred (Junior) Borton and Betty.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, where he served overseas and was discharged with honors. After returning home from the war he began working at the Zeller Corporation and retired from there in 1986 after 44 years. George was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion and the VFW. He was an avid sports fan of Defiance High School and past president of the Defiance Baseball Association. He enjoyed time at home when family and friends came to visit.
Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 7, from 2-8 p.m. at the Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home, 1753 S. Clinton St., Defiance. A scripture service will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John's Catholic Church, Defiance, at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 8. Entombment will be in Riverview Memory Gardens mausoleum.
