Ethel C. Castle, 94, Defiance, died Saturday, January 28, 2012, at Brookview Healthcare Center.
She was born in Scott County, Va., on September 1, 1917, the daughter of Robert J. and Nova (McConnell) Gillespie. She married Barney M. Castle on Nov. 21, 1936, and he died May 5, 1997. She retired from Defiance Hospital, where she was a cook for many years. She was a member of Second Baptist Church.
Surviving are her son, Kermit Castle of Defiance; a daughter, Joan Schindler of Continental, Ohio; a son-in-law, Marlon Hoop of Defiance, Ohio; and four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her father, Robert J. Gillespie; her mother, Nova McConnell; husband, Barney M. Castle; daughter, Peggy Hoop; son, Ronald Wayne Castle; two sisters, Sylvia Killgore and Kathryn Gillespie; four brothers, Bascom Gillespie, Barney Gillespie, Burt Gillespie and Buren Gillespie.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 2, 2012, at the Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, with Rev. Max Begley officiating. Calling will be from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Ayersville Cemetery.
