CONTINENTAL -- George W. Shirey, 86, of Continental, died at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012, at Mercy Defiance Hospital, Defiance.
He was born September 20, 1925, in Cloverdale, to the late Russell and Treva (Martin) Shirey. On September 10, 1943, he married Carol Rockey and she died November 13, 2009.
He is survived by three children, Judy (Howard) Mayes of Continental, Mike (Lana) Shirey of Continental, and Martin (Susan) Shirey of Defiance; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Fred Shirey.
He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Jordan C. Shirey; two daughters-in-law, Mary Lou Shirey and Rose Shirey; a sister, Zola Mae Leatherman; and a sister-in-law, Sylvia Shirey.
George was a self-employed carpenter and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Continental American Legion Post 541, Defiance American AMVETS Post 1991 and the Grover Hill VFW Post 2873.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Continental, with Rev. Terry Porter officiating. Burial will be in Cascade Cemetery, Cloverdale, with military rites by the Continental American Legion. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. Saturday until the time of service at the funeral home.
